News: Checkmate – The New MING 20.11 Mosaic
Detail is the name of the game for Ming—and this new Ming 20.11 Mosaic is no different. While at first glance, the 20.11 Mosaic might look to be like any other Ming watch—its details reveal another story entirely.
The case is larger—now 41.5mm, as opposed to the 38/39mm cases we’ve seen from Ming in the past—and is also grade 5 titanium, finished with a mixture of brushed and polished surfaces. However, it’s not just the case that’s different on the 20.11 Mosaic—take a look at the dial.
As the 20.11 Mosaic name suggests, the dial is mosaic in appearance, consisting of some 2,650 squares. The dial—which is a transparent sapphire crystal—is laser-etched. Which is a far more complicated process than it sounds.
For those that don’t know, sapphire crystal—while scratch-resistant—is actually pretty brittle. So, to concentrate the laser on one spot without the dial turning from a sapphire mosaic into a sapphire puzzle, Ming had to start off with a sapphire crystal that’s 1.3mm thick. The femtosecond laser—a laser that bursts at one quadrillionth of a second—then etches away at three different depths of the crystal, one square at a time, to achieve the desired mosaic effect. Doesn’t sound so simple now, does it?
In addition to all these new details, the features we’ve come to love are still present. You’ve got the brand’s staple flared lugs, the skeletonised hands and simple hour markers—all still coated with ceramic Super-LumiNova for increased legibility once light becomes scarce—and of course, a Schwarz-Etienne movement, the Calibre ASE200.2, which has a power reserve of 86 hours and a 21,600 vph beat rate.
Ming continues to be a breath of fresh air for the watch industry. It doesn’t conform to traditions, it doesn’t produce homages to the greats, it is what it is—and that’s why it continues to capture the hearts of watch lovers everywhere.
